Inside Airside Operations

Sitting outside of the terminal and traffic control tower is Brisbane Airport’s Airside Operations team, who work to keep taxiways and airside environments safe. We partnered with long-term client Brisbane Airport Corporation to take audiences behind the scenes for a glimpse into life airside.

The Brief

Working as both a corporate brand film and recruitment tool, our brief from Brisbane Airport was to deliver a cinematic take on life out on the tarmac, documenting the day-to-day of the Airside Operations Team. We developed a strategic narrative and high-level messaging with the Head of Airside Operations, with the remit of providing an authentic and real-life perspective of the team ‘on the ground’. and the vital role that they play in keeping the airport safe, 24 hours a day.

Finding the Interesting

The personality and cinematic influence of the film is driven by the members of the Airside Operations team themselves.  In candid one-on-one interviews with individuals from the team, we began to understand their drive for returning to work each day – the quiet of the morning sunrise, the up close and personal moments with large aircraft, and the diversity of challenges that greet them each day. For us, replicating this in the production approach was critical to communicating an authentic experience of the team.

We’re aware that for some people, being in front of the camera can also be intimidating. It’s important to us to always work supportively and collaboratively with all our talent, and ensure that their film experience is a positive one. Rather than profile individuals in a combined audio and visual setting, we conducted audio-only interviews with the team. Capturing candid and unscripted moments of their story separately across  B-roll and audio footage was a key creative technique, rather than relying on the Airside team to interact with the camera. This agile approach meant we could layer the film with audio, and diverse visuals, capturing the magic of the role through their eyes, and really communicating the sense of pride the team has for their diverse skill sets and backgrounds.

By using anamorphic lenses, we created an elevated cinematic feel, and the wider aspect the lens allows assisted us to capture the scale of landscape. Paired with handheld camera work and an intentionally curated soundscape, the result is a close connection between the viewer and the Airside team and an intimate perspective of their day-to-day.

Creative Output

The film certainly made headlines across the industry, with the Operations team maximising their use of the content in both a recruitment setting, and using it externally at aviation and transport industry conferences. Testament to the success of the narrative, we received several enquiries from major aviation corporations following the launch of the content, with over 9,000 views on BAC’s YouTube channel alone.
