See the world through fresh eyes with 'Arts Discovery'

As the flagship arts subject for all first-year University of Melbourne Bachelor of Arts Students, ‘Arts Discovery’ needed a moment in the spotlight. The introductory video builds momentum for the core subject and provides an introduction to critical reflection and analytical skills foundational to successful study in the arts.

The Brief

How does the takeaway coffee cup limit or liberate our lives? It’s a question asked by Professor Jacqueline Dutton as she introduces the core subject ‘Arts Discovery’. With Faculty of the Arts staff developing a script in-house, we teamed with the University as a production partner, working from concept development through the delivery to bring their subject overview to life.

Finding the Interesting

Working with Professor Jacqueline Dutton, our team transformed the script to a full screen production. The production introduces students to the critical thinking and reflection skills, providing examples of contemporary analysis of social behaviour, historical influences, and broad research – all through the symbolism of a humble cup of coffee. We kept the pace of the script by managing long single takes in ‘chapters’, using location or stock footage to provide visual relief in between key ideas.

Core to our ability to manage the production in a single day was having a director on-site, holding the days to schedule and providing direction to the talent to ensure their best performance.

Creative Output

The asset is been a core communication tool for the faculty to build momentum for the core subject, and provide BA students with a relatable and compelling introduction to their Arts degree.
